Many times, people like to think that being a Pastor automatically exempts you and your immediate family from having to suffer many of the same trials as others. Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth! On June 13th of this year my wife Ellen got that dreaded phone call that none of us ever wants to take. She had just had a biopsy of her left breast done the week before and the doctor was calling to let her know that she had breast cancer.

As you can imagine, this set off a whirlwind of emotions in my wife's head and it launched a string of doctors appointments in the coming days ahead. Psalm 34:18 tells us "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." Those were the words that she had to live by for the next few weeks as it was difficult to accept this awful news.

For me, the passage found in Philippians 4:5-7 were what I had to lean on as well as it says, "The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Unfortunately, this ordeal is not even close to being over yet as my wife Ellen next faces a complete mastectomy of her left breast followed by radiation/chemotherapy and then medication for the next 5 years. However; she is lucky that it was caught soon enough to be treated and we are hoping for a full recovery.  We are counting on the words of 1 Peter 5:10 that tell us, "And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you."

Restore. That's the word that we are focusing on in this dark time. A complete restoration of her body which will be strengthened through the work of the Holy Spirit! No matter what you are going through in your life, God can and will restore you from whatever it is that ails you too!
