I've heard people ask the popular question, "Why should I bother reading the Old Testament? Isn't that pretty much obsolete since Jesus came to earth and fulfilled profecy?"
The Old Testament is just as much God's Word as anything that you'll read in the New Testament. In fact; God has a lot to teach us in ALL of the pages of the bible. In 2 Timothy 3:16-17 we are told "All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (NIV)
One of the most important things that God wants to teach us from the Old Testament is how NOT to live! The Old Testament tells us a lot about some of God's greatest servants such as Moses, Joseph, Jeremiah and Abraham as well as many others and God wants us to learn from their examples.
However; the Old Testament is also filled with many accounts of men and women who failed God too. We are shown how they didn't do as they were instructed and we learned of the consequences of their failures. Those examples warn each of us of what can happen when we turn aside from following Christ and choosing to do things our own way.
So, learn from the Old Testament just as you do the New Testament and always put God at the beginning of any choice that we make in our lives!
